REVIEW: Hidden Poe Uglydoll
Poe is an Ugly Dragon. Once a year, Ugly Dragons fly along the dark side of the moon. It’s sort of a tradition they have. There’s a bunch of secret bases there now though, so they have to keep themselves hidden. Poe uses his special stealth mode to avoid detection, and uses his special see-o-vision to locate hidden snack foods and unknown toy shops. Poe sometimes skips out on his moon flight and hits the comic conventions Want to geek out with Poe? Want to hide? Both?
Hidden Poe was introduced to collectors at the ’09 NY Comic Con. Like all of the other Uglydolls, David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim designed Poe. However, the original character is a green plush, with Hidden Poe being the black variant.
You probably won’t find the Hidden Poe plush packaged in anything but the air. Unless you picked one up at NY Comic Con…then they were packaged in the Ugly garbage cans. The plush does have a tag with an illustrated Hidden Poe and the background info from above.
Hidden Poe stands approximately 14” in height. This alternate version features red eyes, a gray mouth and yellow teeth (kids…remember to brush daily!). These were introduced at NY Comic Con as a small run plush, however, they’ve been made available to those who couldn’t make it to the show.
If you’ve followed the work of David Horvath, you’ve probably noticed how intrigued he is by cryptozoology. Cryptozoology is the study of hidden or mysterious animals (e.g. Yeti, Mothman, Bigfoot). And if you look at Hidden Poe, even though it says he’s an Ugly Dragon, you and I know who he is. Mothman!
The red eyes, the black silhouette, the wings…Hidden Poe is the one who terrorized those towns in West Virginia back in the 1960’s. While not everyone (especially younger collectors) will pick up on the similarities between Hidden Poe and Mothman, we like this color variant better than the original green Ugly Dragon.
