Background

One of the newest figures released by Wheaty Wheat Studios is the Space Crab designed by Pixelfillu. While there’s not a lot of background information on the character, you can deduce by looking at the vinyl piece (and by its name) that these are giant crabs dressed in space suits. The piece was released in four different colorways – red, green, white and black.

Packaging

The figure is packaged in a window-front box that features Space Crab artwork on three of the panels (the sides and back). There is no background information included about the character.  And each figure is contained in dual plastic trays.

The Figures

The Space Crab rotocast vinyl stands approximately 5" tall and 6" long (from its’ back to the front of the claw). It has three points of articulation (claw arms and the head). The helmet, which has a clear piece of plastic in it, is removable.  And the head can be popped off and swapped between Space Crabs.

Designed by Pixelfillu, the figure is available in four different colorways – White (LE of 560), Red (LE of 304), Green (LE of 160) and Black (LE of 80). Each piece is hand numbered on the back of the helmet.

Our Opinion

There are usually two things we look for in a vinyl figure – a great sculpt/character and an entertaining background story.  At this point, we don’t have much of a story regarding the Space Crabs, but the figure is entertaining nonetheless.

The first thing I noticed about the four colorways is that the red version doesn’t have the largest run - the white figure does. Which, I guess, means that the white figure is the standard version. Interesting choice. And I wasn’t sure why they chose the green head for the white body.  The heads are interchangeable, so if you like, you can change it out with a different color.

The sculpt on the figure is well done.  The legs look very cartoonish, while the giant claw arms should be resting on the ground to make sure the piece is properly balanced.  When it comes to the helmet, it’s possible that there might be some paint transfer on the inside of the Space Crab’s suit.  And since we prefer the piece sans helmet, this might be an issue.

Collectors don’t see crabs turned into vinyl figures often, so it’s a fairly unique piece. And the Space Crabs are available for a pretty reasonable price, given its size.
