Background

Spanish designer - Emilio Garcia - describes his Jumping Brain character as “all the prodigious brains that day by day, with their art, work (to) stimulate the scene of pop-surrealism.”  We look at it and see a brain crossed with a frog.

Garcia and lapolab have turned his creation into a high quality resin piece.  Some folks might find it creepy, some might find it introspective…we just find it interesting.

Packaging

The Jumping Brain DIY figure was packaged in a fairly simple brown cardboard box.  It had Promo Edition LE 50 stenciled on the top.  Inside, the figure was wrapped in tissue paper and surrounded by Styrofoam peanuts.

The Figure

The Jumping Brain DIY figure stands approximately 3” in height and has no points of articulation.  Made of high quality resin, the figure actually splits in half (or into hemispheres?).  It’s held in place using a trio of pegs that surprisingly hold it together quite well.  It's sculpted to resemble a brain with frog legs protruding from its' sides.

Each figure is packaged with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.  (It’s signed by the artist – Emilio Garcia)  The DIY White Promo series was limited to a run of 50 pieces.  The red edition, which quickly sold out, was limited to a 120 piece run.  Each piece is signed and numbered on the bottom of its' leg.

Our Opinion

I’ll start off by saying that I was a little disappointed when I opened up the box and saw the little guy was missing one of his toes.  It had broken off sometime during the transport from Spain (totally understandable).  I superglued it.  And since it’s a white figure, the area is not noticeable.

With the being said, I find the character eerily entertaining.  At first, it looks rather simply…but after looking at it closely, you see just how complex the piece is.

The sculpting is amazing, especially the detail on the various lobes.  They’re all sculpted in an intertwining manner.  While the section between the two halves is smooth, the underbelly of the piece has more intricate sculpting work.  Someone must have made great use of anatomy books and/or a neurosurgeon.

Overall, this is one of the top handmade figures released this year.  While things like artist editions might not make sense, Emilio continues to drop various colored Jumping Brains in limited editions through his site.  They’re definitely worth the investment.
