REVIEW: Hellboy 2 – The Golden Army 3.75″ Boxed Set

Hellboy II: The Golden Army was released in theaters this past July. And like the first movie, Mezco grabbed the license to produce action figures based on the film.

The Hellboy 2: The Golden Army 3.75” Boxed Set includes four of the key characters from the film: Hellboy (the evil-fighting red demon), Liz Sherman (the pyrokinetic BPRD investigator), Johann Krauss (a German psychic whose ectoplasmic being is contained in a suit) and Mr. Wink (a giant cave troll who protects the evil Prince Nuada).

Packaging

The boxed set is…well…in a window front box as a set. In this way, it’s great to either display in the box or remove and place in a primo spot on your shelves. Each figure includes a stand, so you’ve got options. The packaging is Hellboy II themed, with photos of the figures (and included accessories) on the back.

The Figures

The Hellboy 2: The Golden Army 3.75” Boxed Set includes 4 different figures – Hellboy, Liz Sherman, Johann and Wink. While they’re called 3.75”, they’re actually more 1/18 scale. Wink is a little larger (4”) than the others. They all have around 13 or 14 points of articulation, depending on the figure.

Each figure in the set comes with its own display stand as well as the following accessories: Hellboy – Good Samaritan; Liz – pistol and flame; Johann – plasma hands; Wink – detachable mace fist.

Our Opinion

It wasn’t until I opened up the package that I realized the figures weren’t attached to the display bases. That one little detail completely changed my outlook on the line. It went from something with limited playability – still cool looking - to essentially Hellboy/GI Joe figures.

For such small figures, the sculpting work on the 3.75” Hellboy 2 set is excellent. There’s a ton of little details that you won’t find on other figures of this size. Mezco is always good for getting those little details perfect. The accessories are pretty run-of-the-mill action figure. The detachable mace fist on Wink is great, but Hellboy was without his Big Baby Shotgun…even though it was listed on the packaging.
