Background

Funko, and their Fantastik Plastik line, has brought us the Mad Monster Party set of vinyl figures.  What is the Mad Monster Party, you ask?  It’s the silliest party of the year…and you’re all invited. That was actually the tagline for the Rankin/Bass, late 60’s claymation special.

Made by the same people who did the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Christmas special, Mad Monster Party stars Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller.  It was inspiration behind Tim Burton’s mega-hit – The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Packaging

All four of the figures (Dracula, Frankenstein, Werewolf and Zombie Bellhop) come packaged in a see through, cylindrical package.  There is little reading information, but there are a few pictures of the characters from the classic film.  The same package is used for all of the figures.

The Figure

FreeBento.com has sent us the Werewolf and Dracula vinyl figures for this review.  These rotocast vinyl figures stand 6” tall and have no points of articulation.  So what you see, is essentially what you get.

Our Opinion

Funko is well known for producing their cheeky, cult favorite
bobblehead figures.  Their Fantastik Plastik line is essentially the
bobblehead minus the bobble.  The figures in this line are “compact”.
What do I mean by that?  Well…there is no real separation between the arms
and the body or between the legs.

Not having seen the movie, I had to do a little research to determine
how well these figures captured their on-screen counterparts.  From the
stills I saw, it looks like Funko has done a bang-up job.  Personally,
I prefer the Dracula figure over the Werewolf.  It seems like he is in
a more natural pose, and I don’t like how there is a brown space in
between the Werewolf’s pant legs.  I know it’s supposed to be his
tails, but it just looks silly to me.

There is a reason these figures run around $15 each.  They are not the
top-of-the-line quality we have come to expect from some other designer
toy companies.  However, they are: 1) affordable and 2) the only Mad
Monster Party vinyl figures out there.  So if you are a fan of the
classic claymation flick, these should be a no-brainer.  There are
plans to add more characters from Mad Monster Party, so be on the
lookout.
